In the summer of 2018, Katy Grannan was invited by Document Journal to photograph Gucci's new line for the Fall/Winter 2018 issue. Katy has long made editorial and fashion work alongside her fine art practice, and has shot for publications such as W and Vogue. This invitation was unique for its open parameters. She could use any location, and any models.

For the shoot, Katy returned to an idea central to her earliest work in California: photographing subjects encountered spontaneously on the street, posed against a stark white background, lit by the bright, harsh sun. Along with Document's fashion director Sarah Richardson and a crew of stylists, she set up locations in Palm Springs and Hollywood. The subjects vary - they are long-time collaborators Katy had specifically invited to participate, pedestrians walking by, drivers dropping off their passengers, inspired onlookers. Many images include artifacts of the shoot: fans, light reflectors, hair and accessory assistants. The resulting portfolio is a unique amalgam of street fashion and haute couture.

The artist has released some of the images from the project as a limited edition - such as the portrait of Nicole. The model wears a dress and earrings by Gucci, and rings by Gucci Fine Jewelry as well as her own.
